What Is A Chaffle?! The Keto Waffle You Need To Try!

If you’re on a keto or low-carb diet, you know how exciting it is when you find mouthwatering recipe “replacements” to fulfill your cravings for carb-like foods that no longer fit into your eating plan. Though there are abundant keto bread and dessert recipes, there’s an exciting new keto “staple” recipe that’s currently getting tons of attention… and it’s called the “chaffle”.

What Is A Chaffle?!

If you haven’t yet heard of the chaffle, your breakfast is about to get a lot more exciting! Basically, a chaffle is a keto version of a regular waffle! That’s right, a completely low-carb waffle. The keto chaffle recipe gets its name from the very simple main ingredient… cheese! Cheese + waffle = chaffle!

Of course, there are different variations of the chaffle, and the best news is, you can expand this breakfast recipe favorite to also become a staple in many other meals. This is because the chaffle recipe is completely customizable, and can be used in a variety of ways, and enjoyed at a variety of times… from the first meal of the day, to lunch, dinner or even dessert!

Do Keto Waffles Actually Taste Good?

We know what you’re thinking… How the heck could heated egg and cheese even remotely resemble the fluffy taste and texture of an actual waffle? We know this sounds crazy, but we also assure you, lots of people are trying keto chaffle recipes, and falling in love! Truly, the consensus is that they taste delicious.

Depending on how you make them (we give different options for recipe variations below), they can be more savory or sweet, or more “carb-like” using a keto-friendly flour. But however you whip them up, (from basic to involved), chaffles really do taste like waffles!

Can You Freeze/Re-heat Chaffles?

You may also be wondering if chaffles can be part of your weekly meal prep, and the answer is yes! This is another reason chaffles are so popular, because they can be made ahead of time, and used later. To freeze, simply add chaffles to an air-tight freezer bag and use within 3 months. To reheat, put chaffles in a toaster machine or oven for a few minutes to crisp up before serving.

How Do You Make a Chaffle?

Finally, the good stuff! We’ll fill you in on how you make this delicacy, and the good news is… You can make a chaffle from start to finish in about 10 minutes! Again, there are different variations based on your preferences, but we’re going to tell you how to make a basic chaffle first.

What do I need to make a chaffle?

Most people are making their chaffle keto recipes using a mini waffle maker (lots of people like this DASH chaffle waffle maker). However, any waffle maker will do… The reason people are using this mini version is because it makes the perfect size waffle to use in many different recipes (like for chaffle ice cream sandwiches, chaffle sandwich buns, etc.). Also, because the waffle surface area is smaller than a regular waffle maker, it creates the perfect depth and width for a chaffle, which won’t be as thick as a regular Belgian waffle.

Basic Chaffle Recipe:

Serving size: 1

Ingredients:

  • 1 (preferably free-range, organic) egg
  • ½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese (the thinly sliced the better)

Instructions:

  1. Plug in the waffle maker so it starts to heat up (which takes a few minutes).
  2. Beat the egg in a bowl.
  3. Add the cheese into the bowl and combine with the egg.
  4. Spray the waffle maker with cooking spray.
  5. Add the batter into the waffle maker, close the lid and wait 3-5 minutes (some recipes say to wait 5-7 minutes depending on your waffle maker).
  6. Open the lid and enjoy your golden brown chaffle, with a crispy outside and soft inside!

Ways To Switch Up The Basic Chaffle Recipe

There are a number of different chaffle recipes out there to meet every taste, preference, and meal! However, if you want to freestyle it and experiment with different flavors without a recipe, here are some popular ways people are getting creative with their chaffle keto recipes…

  • Add almond flour (to make it more carb-like/fluffy)
  • Add meal replacement shake powder for additional flavor, protein, fiber and nutrients
  • Use cheddar cheese instead of mozzarella (for a more cheesy taste)
  • Add cocoa powder to fulfill your craving for chocolate
  • Add peanut butter or peanut butter powder for added protein and flavor
  • Use egg whites instead of whole eggs (to give them less eggy flavor)
  • Add keto-friendly sweetener (like Stevia or Swerve) for dessert recipes
  • Add vanilla (goes great in sweet recipes)
  • Add sweet spices (like pumpkin pie spice, cinnamon or nutmeg)
  • Add savory spices (garlic, onion, basil, rosemary or thyme)
  • Add seeds for crunch and good fats (chia, flax, hemp)

Beyond that, there are seriously so many ways you can switch up your chaffles! And wait until you see all the ways you can then use them in different meals…

Ways To Enjoy Your Chaffles

Again, you really want to check out these amazing chaffle recipes, but for some initial chaffle ideas, you can use them to make…

  • Regular breakfast waffles (top with grass-fed butter and keto maple syrup)
  • A breakfast egg sandwich (use as the bun)
  • A keto breakfast or treat topped with keto-friendly fruit, nut butter or keto whipped cream
  • A grilled cheese, BLT or your favorite sandwich (use as the bread)
