City Dining Guide: 7 Keto-Friendly Restaurants in San Francisco

San Francisco is definitely a foodie destination like no other, and the good news is, you don’t have to miss out if you’re following the popular low-carb, ketogenic diet. While dining out on the town in this beautiful coastal city, you’ll find restaurants in every cuisine you can imagine – with lots of intriguing keto-friendly options.

From fresh seafood, to farm-to-table meats, to organic produce, probably one of the most appealing things about the food culture in this city is the focus on healthy first. Though you will still find decadent indulgences, you can definitely stick to a more nutritious keto diet while enlivening your taste buds when you follow our recommendations, below…

 1) Kitava

2011 Mission St, San Francisco, CA 94110

If you’re trying to follow a keto diet that’s as clean as possible, this low-carb restaurant offering fresh, healthy selections will help you meet your goal while eating out. All of the meats are pasture-raised, the beef is 100% grass-fed, and the salmon is Alaskan wild caught. Plus, all of the dishes are free from gluten, soy, dairy, corn, peanuts, refined sugar and seed oils! There are also a ton of vegetarian/vegan options for plant-eaters on keto.

Keto Menu Highlights: The “mix and match” bowls are perfect for keto-lovers, since you can sub cauliflower rice for the jasmine rice and get extra kale slaw in place of beans. For your protein, the salmon or pulled pork are particularly great keto options, and can be paired with turmeric-spiced cauliflower, roasted broccoli or roasted Brussel sprouts.

 2) Kitchen Keto

1760 Cesar Chavez, San Francisco, CA 94124

Get excited because this innovative restaurant (that’s most popular for its delivery services), is 100% keto. That means that everything you find on the menu will fit nicely into your high-fat, low-carb dietary plan. In fact, the macros for each meal (fat, net carbs, protein and calories) are all listed on the menu! You’ll find decadent options with big flavor that won’t kick you out of ketosis.

Keto Menu Highlights: Fans rave about the Cauliflower Carbonara, which includes roasted cauliflower slices in a cream sauce with smoky bacon, chicken, mushrooms, black pepper and scallions. Or, if you’re more in the mood for Mexican fare, the Keto Fajita Bowl includes avocado, chicken, jalepeno and more over a tasty cilantro-lime cauliflower rice.

 3) Asian Box

2031 Chestnut St, San Francisco, CA 94123

When you’re in the mood for great Asian food when eating out on keto, this fresh and healthy Vietnamese restaurant is an awesome choice. Create your own food box – starting with an Asian salad – and add your choice of protein (or double the protein), a variety of yummy toppers and a sauce. All boxes also come with sauce-tossed or steamed veggies. You can also choose from a selection of specialty boxes instead of making your own– just sub out the rice for salad!

Menu Highlights: We’re particularly intrigued by the garlic and soy-glazed beef and the lime basil tossed shrimp, although all the protein options are mouthwatering. For toppers, the chopped peanuts, fresh jalapeno and scallion oil are great keto choices – and the peanut sauce with lime and coconut sounds amazing!

 4) Cockscomb

564 4th St, San Francisco, CA 94107

When you want a more indulgent dinner, and you’re in an adventurous mood, Cockscomb is an exciting restaurant to try while eating out on the keto diet. It’s also a place where you can taste lots of unique menu items you’ve probably never tried before, all while watching the kitchen staff work their magic from the bar tables.

Keto Menu Highlights: According to reviews, a great starter to share with friends is the beef heart tartare, which they mentioned was extremely fresh, with an addicting mix of flavors. The lacinato kale with avocado, pine nuts, cotija cheese and poblano buttermilk dressing also looks sinfully delicious. For a keto entrée, try the coulotte steak, the bacon chop, or the oven roasted pig’s head (to share).

 5) Poki Time

549 Irving St, San Francisco, CA 94122

A keto-friendly restaurant where you can create your own poki bowl?! Yes, please! How it works is you start with a base, which for keto-goers would be mixed greens or kale (or half and half)! Then you choose your fish, (and all the selections look delicious). Finally, pick a sauce and a variety of yummy toppings. Reviews mention that the meal sizes are massive, the food is always fresh, and there’s a casual, Hawaiian vibe that keeps you coming back.

Keto Menu Highlight: A fan favorite is the crab meat (wild blue crab) which is definitely a unique choice, but salmon and spicy tuna are great, heart-healthy options as well. For toppings, avocado, ginger, seaweed salad and jalapeno will all kick things up a notch, and if you like it hot, try the spicy mayo sauce on top!

 6) Roam Artisan Burgers

1923 Fillmore St, San Francisco, CA 94115

When you’re in the mood for a burger when eating out on keto, this is definitely the spot for you. This hip, casual foodie location offers burgers that use 100% grass-fed beef or lamb, free-range turkey, all-natural bison, or house-made organic veggies. You can choose from a selection of specialty burgers or create your own with a variety of interesting toppings – and they’re all available on a lettuce wrap instead of a bun!

Keto Menu Highlights: After you pick your meat, the Tejano burger is definitely intriguing, with pepper jack cheese, jalapeno relish, avocado and herb ranch; Just hold the tomato and go light on the white corn strips. Or, make your own burger and try it with blue cheese spread, cremini mushrooms and applewood smoked bacon… Yum.

 7) House of Prime Rib

1906 Van Ness Ave, San Francisco, CA 94109

In the mood for something juicy and indulgent? Turns out this iconic restaurant is right up your keto alley! The House of Prime Rib has been around since 1949 and is called a “San Francisco institution” that’s known for its 21-day aged prime rib. Although this is definitely a higher-calorie meal, reviewers who have dined at this restaurant call it a “must go”. But, make a reservation! If you don’t have one, you can still sit at the bar, but spots fill up quick.

Keto Menu Highlights: All of the meat cuts are “carved at your table, to your specifications”, from stainless steel carts. And they only use the “top 2% of all beef marketed”! There are all different cuts of meat available, but the most popular is arguably the House of Prime Rib Cut, including a “hearty portion of juicy, tender beef”. All entrees come with your choice of side, and the creamed spinach or the salad are excellent keto selections.
