Comparison: 310 Shakes vs. Herbalife Shakes
Meal replacement shakes have been shown to not only support weight loss but can also help increase your nutritional intake compared to a more traditional diet. However, not all meal replacement shakes are created equal. Choosing the right meal replacement shake for your weight loss journey can be a tough decision with so many brands to choose from.
When it comes to meal replacement shakes, there are a lot of factors to consider:
- Flavors
- Taste
- Ingredients
- Calories
- Sugars
- Protein
- Fiber
- Carbohydrates (Carbs)
- Vitamins and minerals
- Price
Not only that, but you want to know: does it work? With science-backed research, we’ve broken down all of these factors in comparing 310 Nutrition vs Shakeology so you can make the most informed decision possible.
What is Shakeology?
Shakeology is a meal replacement shake created by The Beachbody Company back in 2009. Beachbody is a private company founded in 1998 with a “mission of helping people achieve their goals and enjoy healthy, fulfilling lives.” Not only do they offer nutrition supplements and meal replacements such as Shakeology, but they also feature nutrition and fitness programs covering everything from in-home fitness guidance to meal plan support.
Described by the company as “your daily dose of dense nutrition” Shakeology is at the center of Beachbody’s weight loss program. Although you can purchase Shakeology directly on the Beachbody website and Amazon has some limited options for purchase as well, the company is considered to be a multilevel marketing company (MLM). As an MLM, Beachbody’s products, including Shakeology, are also available for purchase through individual distributors that they call “coaches”.
To purchase Shakeology or other Beachbody products, you can connect with a Beachbody Coach who will walk you through all the Beachbody offerings. From there, you would continue to make your purchases through your Beachbody Coach. While this method of marketing can help you learn about the product 1-1 with a distributor, MLM’s have received a lot of controversy over their marketing methods.
Flavors
Shakeology
Shakeology comes in several different flavors, including plant-based vegan options. Their flavor choices are Chocolate Whey, Chocolate Plant-Based Vegan, Vanilla Whey, Vanilla Plant-Based Vegan, Café Latte Whey, Café Latte Plant-Based Vegan, Strawberry Whey, and Tropical Strawberry Plant-Based Vegan.
310 Nutrition
310 Organic Meal Replacement Shakes also feature an array of options including Chocolate, Chocolate Mint, Vanilla, Salted Caramel, Unflavored, Peppermint Swirl, Toasted Coconut, Mocha, Gingerbread, Shamrock Cream, and Pumpkin Spice. All the newer shake formulas are vegan, organic, and are created without the use of artificial sweeteners or flavors.
Taste
Shakeology
The reviews for Shakeology on Amazon are 3.1 out of 5 stars with 30% 5-star, 11% 4-star, 13% 3-star, 33% 2-star, and 13% 1-star reviews. A lot of the reviews are centered around the product’s high price and bad aftertaste.
A lot of reviewers are especially critical of Shakeology’s newer shake formula, citing that the taste is significantly changed from the original. One consumer was a long-time user of Shakeology but eventually had to stop using the product after the formula changed. They said, “The new formula makes the taste so bad that I can't stomach a couple of sips of it.”
The aftertaste is also commonly mentioned in reviews. One consumer cited, “The powder was not smooth at all. It was gritty and had an artificial aftertaste that made it almost undrinkable.”
Another user mentioned the bad aftertaste and that they couldn’t mask it by drinking it with other products. “I really did not like the taste… I tried it on a few separate occasions, once with strawberries, once with bananas and once with cashew milk instead of water but I could still taste the weird, chemical-like aftertaste on my tongue.”
Other reviewers cited that the taste was good but that the product is not worth the steep price. One user summarizes this with their review, “Taste good, but not that good for the price. Obviously a SCAM.” Another user recommended viewers to look elsewhere saying, “There's nothing wrong with Shakeology, but the price is absurd.”
Some users highlighted that they loved the taste, such as this user on Influenster who says, “Shakeology is really great! It has so many superfoods in it! After I drink one of these shakes, I feel hydrated and nourished. I have tried almost all the flavors and they are all great.”
However, a lot of reviews on Influenster, MealReplacementShakes.com, and Amazon include these same themes, most mentioning that the price doesn’t make the product worth it, regardless of whether you love or hate the taste.
310 Nutrition
At 310 Nutrition we revamped our 310 Shake formula and one of the major changes was an enhanced taste, smooth, creamy consistency, and exciting new flavors. Most of the shakes are now plant-based, and the improved taste shows in 310 reviews.
310 Shake reviews are overwhelmingly positive. Words used to describe the taste in reviews include: “taste great!”, “love the taste!”, “tastes delicious”, “taste so good”, “best tasting protein shakes I’ve ever tasted”, and more. One reviewer, Jennifer F., states, “The taste is the best protein that I have had and it keeps me full.”
Reviews on Influenster, Amazon, and MealReplacementShakes.com also include similar reviews regarding the great taste of 310 Nutrition shakes, including a 9 out of 10 taste review on BarBend. Reviews on Amazon include, “Can’t beat the taste given the calorie count and healthy ingredients.” and “I LOVE the taste, actually find myself craving it.”
Joe Leech, Dietician and Founder of Diet vs. Disease, a science-backed and independent blog, also mentions how reviews for 310 Nutrition’s shakes have been overwhelmingly positive by stating that “at least 80% of customers gave 310 shakes a four or five-star review on the company’s website.”
Older reviews citing a “chalky texture” and taste are associated with our previous formula. Based on this feedback 310 Nutrition’s new shake formula added pumpkin protein which many reviews have cited as having a smoother and creamier taste. Other changes to 310 Nutrition’s formula have enhanced the flavor, eliminated chalkiness, and further sweetened the shake without adding calories.
A huge reason for the positive reviews on taste is that at 310 Nutrition only plant-based flavors are used to add sweetness, including Stevia and monk fruit, without any of the chemical-based artificial sweeteners. Both monk fruit and Stevia are sweeter than table sugar but have zero calories and carbs.

The Shakeology ingredients feature a healthy blend of protein sources, antioxidants, and superfoods. However, the shake contains a high amount of sugar, carbohydrates, and cholesterol which we will break down in further detail below.
310 Nutrition
The ingredients listed in 310 Nutrition’s Organic Vanilla Shake include Tri-Plex Protein Blend (organic pea protein isolate, organic brown rice protein concentrate, organic pumpkin protein), 310 Organic Fiber Superfood Blend (FiberSMART organic soluble tapioca fiber, organic alfalfa powder, organic apple powder, organic beet root powder, organic broccoli powder, organic chaga mushroom powder, organic chlorella powder, organic ginger root, organic spinach powder, organic spirulina powder, and organic turmeric powder), organic coconut creamer (organic coconut oil, organic rice syrup solids, organic pea protein, contains 2% or less of each of the following: sodium citrate, tricalcium phosphate, organic sunflower lecithin.), organic flavors, non-GMO Ticaloid Ultrasmooth Powder (guar gum, gum acacia, and xanthan gum), Himalayan pink salt, Stevia, monk fruit extract.
As we break down in our below sections, the ingredients chosen for 310 Nutrition are centered around helping you choose a healthy weight-loss solution with ingredients you recognize and can feel confident about.
Calories
One key to losing weight is more calories used (energy expended) than calories consumed (food consumed throughout the day). So when embarking on a weight loss journey, putting yourself in a slight caloric deficit is one way to reach your goal. When it comes to meal replacement shakes, it’s important to aim for a shake that combines a nutrient-dense profile with the least amount of calories.
However, everybody is different so before entering a calorie-restricted diet, make sure to consult with your doctor. There are also tools you can use to help you including calorie restriction guides and Keto or calorie calculators.
Shakeology vs. 310 Nutrition
310’s Plant-Based Vanilla Shake comes in with a lower calorie count at 110 calories per serving, whereas the Shakeology Vanilla Shake has 140 calories per serving. A big reason for Shakeology’s higher caloric intake is the higher protein, fiber, and sugar contents of the shake.
Shakeology has 6g of fiber, 7g of sugar, and 17g of protein compared to 310’s Shake which has 5g of fiber, 0g of sugar, and 15g of protein. Both 310 and Shakeology are high in fiber and protein, which can lead to a higher calorie count than other meal replacement shakes.
However, the higher sugar content of Shakeology is also increasing the calorie count of the shake while adding unhealthy ingredients into your diet. Though Shakeology’s shake is not extensively high in calories, 310’s Shake will help you cut down your daily caloric intake more and potentially bring about faster results.
Sugars
This is an important topic when it comes to meal replacement shakes because sugar in any form is one of the main contributors to weight gain. Sugar has also been linked to an increased risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases.
Therefore when trying to lose weight, it is best to avoid sugar as much as possible. Sugar is high in calories, does not provide essential nutrients, and does not help curb a person’s appetite. In light of this research, you should choose a diet shake with low sugar content.
Shakeology vs. 310 Nutrition
310 Nutrition’s shakes contain 0 grams of sugar whereas Shakeology shakes contain 7 grams of sugar per serving. That means that if you are having two of these shakes a day, you’re consuming 14g of sugar in just those two diet shakes. This makes 310 the better alternative when it comes to reducing your sugar intake.
Both the 310 and Shakeology shakes do not contain artificial sweeteners like many other meal replacement shakes. Instead of using real sugar or artificial sugar, 310 Shakes are sweetened using Stevia in combination with monk fruit in many of the flavors. Both Stevia and monk fruit are plant-based sugar alternatives. Shakeology uses organic cane sugar and Stevia to sweeten their shake.
Stevia, which is used by both 310 and Shakeology, is a 0 calorie, plant-based sweetener derived from the South American plant “Stevia Rebaudiana”. It contains rebaudioside and steviol glycosides and is approximately 150-200 times sweeter tasting than sugar. Not only does it not have any calories, carbs, or fat, but due to its sweet taste, you need less of it than real sugar or artificial sweeteners.
Monk fruit, used in 310’s newer shake formula, is a small green melon native to southern China. Like Stevia, monk fruit is 150-250 times sweeter than table sugar and has zero calories and carbs.
Organic cane sugar, used in Shakeology, is extracted from organically grown sugar cane. Cane sugar can help add glucose into your diet, which is your body’s primary source of energy. While a healthier sugar alternative than fructose or other sweeteners frequently used in meal replacement shakes, organic cane sugar is still sugar. While in moderation, it can have potential health benefits, consumed frequently it poses the same risks as all types of sugar.
Protein
Research shows that consuming protein can complement the weight loss process by controlling your appetite and helping to boost your metabolism. After all, one of the biggest barriers to successful weight loss is sticking to a low-calorie diet when you are feeling hungry and unsatisfied. Therefore, when considering a meal replacement shake it’s important to look at the protein contents of a meal replacement shake.
To get the maximum benefit, you should aim for a meal replacement shake that contains between 15 and 25 grams of protein. It is also essential to consider the type of protein in your meal replacement shake because not all proteins are the same.
Shakeology vs. 310 Nutrition
With 17 grams of protein in Shakeology and 15 grams of protein in 310, both shakes are considered high protein meal replacement shakes. In terms of protein type, both protein blends use healthy protein sources that are optimal for the weight loss process. Shakeology uses a protein blend that consists of whey protein isolate, pea protein, flax, and Quinoa. 310 uses a Tri-Plex™ protein blend of pumpkin, pea, and brown rice protein.
Whey protein
Whey protein is one of the most popular protein powders used in both protein shakes and meal replacement shakes. Its popularity stems from the fact that whey is easily absorbed by the body and is considered a complete protein, containing all the essential amino acids your body needs. However, some research has found that whey can cause gastrointestinal discomfort, especially for those who have an allergy or sensitivity to dairy products. Given that whey is a byproduct of cheese production, it is not ideal for all people looking to lose weight.
Flax protein
Flax protein is a great protein and fiber source for weight loss. Although not a complete protein solution given flax seeds are missing the amino acid lysine, they are still an excellent source of protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals, and omega-3 fatty acids. Flax seeds contain about 55% omega-3 fatty acids, 30% protein, and 35% fiber. In 100g of edible flaxseed, the total dietary fiber intake is about 24.5g. This high fiber count helps in the weight loss process by increasing feelings of fullness that make it easier to reduce your caloric intake.
Quinoa protein
Like flax protein, quinoa is another great healthy protein option. Quinoa is packed with omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins and minerals, protein, and fiber. Unlike flax seeds, however, quinoa is a complete protein source, with all nine essential amino acids that your body needs. The high fiber content in quinoa also makes it easier to watch your weight by keeping you full for longer.
Pea protein
Pea protein, used by both 310 and Shakeology, is made from yellow split peas and is especially rich in the essential amino acids BCAA. Studies have shown that pea protein may help you feel full for longer and help lower your blood pressure.
Pumpkin seed protein
While pumpkin seed protein is not a complete protein because it is low in the essential amino acids threonine and lysine, there’s evidence that these amino acids provide many health benefits. Complemented with the high protein content of pea protein, pumpkin seed protein adds a great layer of nutrition to the 310 meal replacement shakes, with high amounts of magnesium, zinc, iron, and other minerals.
Brown rice protein
Brown rice protein, like pea protein, is a good source of BCAAs that support muscle growth. Although brown rice protein contains all the essential amino acids, it doesn’t quite qualify as a complete protein due to the low content of lysine. However, brown rice, pea, potato, and wheat proteins have the highest protein content among most plant-based protein sources.
Fiber
Fiber can be particularly helpful in weight loss because of its ability to help keep you feeling full for longer. It also aids in proper digestion and assists in the body’s natural detoxification processes. Since feelings of satiation can prevent you from eating additional calories throughout the day, the best diet shakes will have a significant amount of fiber in them. Without a good amount of quality fiber, a meal replacement shake is not going to be effective.
Shakeology vs. 310 Nutrition
With 6 grams of fiber in Shakeology and 5 grams of fiber in 310, both shakes are high in fiber and both will help keep you feeling full for longer as part of your weight loss journey. By snacking on high fiber foods like fruits, vegetables, and legumes, in addition to your 310 Nutrition or Shakeology meal replacement shake, you can consume your daily recommended dose of fiber while working towards your weight loss goals.
Carbohydrates
Contrary to public opinion, most carbohydrates (carbs) are not bad for you and are your body’s preferred source of energy. Healthy carbs like fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and legumes (such as beans, lentils, and peas) are a recommended addition to a healthy diet. According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, carbs should make up 45% to 65% of your total daily calorie intake.
However, not all carbs are good carbs. For the most part, “good” carbs are the ones that contain high amounts of fiber and “bad” carbs contain low amounts of fiber. Your body needs fiber for energy production so you can go about your day without feeling sluggish or tired.
This means that when looking for an ideal meal replacement shake, the number of carbohydrates matters less than the types of ingredients used and the amount of fiber. To help identify a healthy shake when it comes to carbohydrates, it’s important to look for a lower net carb shake. Net carbs are the carbs absorbed by your body. You generally calculate net carbs by subtracting the fiber from the total carbohydrate count.
Shakeology vs. 310 Nutrition
310 Nutrition’s shake has 2 grams of net carbs per serving, while Shakeology has 9 grams of net carbs. While Shakeology does have a slightly higher fiber count which would increase this number, the higher net carbs come from the shake’s higher sugar levels. Since “good” carbohydrates are recommended for a healthy diet, your meal replacement shake shouldn’t add unnecessary or unhealthy ingredients like sugar into your routine.
Vitamins & Minerals
When looking to lose weight and cutting back on calories, it can be hard to get all of the nutrients that you need for a healthy diet. When looking for a healthy meal replacement shake, it’s important to check for the vitamins and minerals the shake contains. A lot of meal replacement shakes are fortified with the right vitamins to sustain your body as you look to lose weight, but not all of them are the same.
Shakeology vs. 310 Nutrition
Shakeology shakes contain a large variety of vitamins and minerals including vitamin D, calcium, iron, potassium, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin B6, folate, vitamin B12, biotin, magnesium, zinc, and selenium. They also contain a variety of probiotics, antioxidants, and adaptogens such as chicory root, yacon root, pomegranate, rose hips, chaga, and maitake.
As for 310 Nutrition, the newest shake formula contains calcium and iron in all of the newer shake flavors as well as potassium in the Chocolate shake. The older shake formulas contain vitamin A, calcium, vitamin D, thiamin, niacin, folate, biotin, phosphorus, magnesium, copper, vitamin C, iron, vitamin E, riboflavin, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, pantothenic acid, iodine, zinc, and chloride.
Shakeology’s meal replacement shakes have more vitamins and minerals than 310 Nutrition’s
newer shake formula. This is because 310 Nutrition’s newer formula prioritizes organic and
nutrient-dense ingredients which excludes the use of a lot of added vitamins. 310 Nutrition’s unique blend of superfoods in the new 310 Shake formula include beets, broccoli, ginger, spinach, and turmeric. These ingredients provide antioxidants (like Vitamin C and E) and plant-rich phytochemicals that enrich your daily routine.
Price
When it comes to price, the Shakeology Shake is $129.95 for 30 servings ($4.33 per serving) while 310 Nutrition’s Shake is $68.00 for 28 servings ($2.42 per serving) or $39.00 for 14 servings ($2.78 per serving). 310 Nutrition also has options to subscribe and save 25% off that price.
As we mentioned in the taste reviews for Shakeology, this is a big area where you will find complaints from Shakeology customers, since these shakes are very expensive. If you were drinking one Shakeology shake a day as part of your weight loss diet, you would be spending over $100 every month, or about $32 each week, just to be part of this shake program.
Although both 310 and Shakeology compare when it comes to high-quality ingredients, fiber, and protein, Shakeology’s shake is almost twice the price of 310’s Shake. It’s hard to justify this higher price tag when you can save money and get 310 for a little more than half that amount.
Which shake works?
When it comes to weight loss, there is no silver bullet. While meal replacement shakes are a great way to feel full and get all your necessary nutrients as you reduce your calorie intake, many factors equate to the success of healthy weight loss. No product alone will help a person achieve their weight loss goals. Therefore, it is important to factor in things like healthy eating in between shakes and a fitness routine to keep you moving, all as part of a weight-loss solution.
Both 310 Nutrition and Shakeology are healthy meal replacement shakes with complete plant-based and healthy protein sources, a good amount of fiber, and high-quality ingredients. Both shakes offer a great option for someone looking to lose weight. Where they differ is that 310 Nutrition has a lower net carb, calorie, and sugar count, higher ratings for taste and quality, and a much lower price.
The answer on which shake works and which one is right for you depends on your situation, on what kind of weight loss plan you are looking for, and how much you want to pay for a weight loss program. Everybody is different and how your body will react to a meal replacement shake and weight loss plan might be different than someone else. We always recommend getting new products approved by your physician or medical care provider, as everyone is unique and has different needs.
Summary and Conclusion
When it comes to the showdown between 310 Shakes and Shakeology Shakes, it comes down to what you’re seeking and how much you want to spend. Both Shakeology and 310 are high-quality shakes and their programs focus on a healthy, clean-eating lifestyle. This type of weight loss program is helpful for anyone looking for a long-term weight loss solution.
The drawbacks of Shakeology are the product’s high price and high sugar and carb content. The high price is very common for multi-level marketing companies (MLMs) like Beachbody. MLMs overprice their products to pay commission for all their distributors, or in this case “coaches”. While many MLMs claim that the steeper price is a result of higher quality products, this doesn’t match up when you compare Shakeology to 310, another high-quality shake at a much lower price.
Given the high quality of ingredients, fiber and protein content, the array of flavor choices, and positive reviews, 310 Shake is the better choice for someone who isn’t looking to break the bank but still wants to prioritize their weight loss journey.
